Your Talents Are Your Gifts

I never knew how important it was to truly define what you’re good at. I knew that I was always good in school and had a variety of interests but there were always too many choices. That question we are always asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” seems to spark confusion and even stress.

When I was growing up, I had workaholics for role models. Both my mother and father worked extremely hard, always working overtime for most of their life. I knew I didn’t want to work for anyone else and had a strong entrepreneurial spirit.

It wasn’t until later on in life when I realized I had to learn more about who I was and what I was really good at. I’ve read tons of books on a variety of subjects but the one that stands out the most is called, “Now, Discover Your Strengths” by Marcus Buckingham and Donald Clifton. This book has info from the Gallup Association to help people gain insights on what they’re really good at.

After discovering my own strengths, I started putting those talents to use. The theory is if you put those talents into action in your work and personal life, you’ll achieve greater success and fulfillment.

I also enjoy many other personality tests like the D.I.S.C. program and of course, Myers-Briggs.   Throughout my professional life, I have always worked in a leadership role making important decisions. Communications is one of my strongest assets and may explain why I was in the communications industry for over 13 years before starting my own company.

It’s worth the time and money to invest in yourself to learn all you can about your real talents because these are the gifts you offer the world.
