Riding Attitude – Getting it Right

“Every day, in every way, I am getting better and better.” — Emile Coue

I have had a few clients lately who have been doing the whole “I’m not good enough” thing. So I thought in this article I would explore the notion of getting it right, and the addiction a lot of people have to attaining perfection.

My mentor once said to me that people who are perfectionists are actually saying they have no standards. Now, this can be interpreted in many ways, but I took it to mean perfection cannot exist. It is based on a belief that something cannot be improved or made better. Now we know logically that this is not true. Anything and everything can always be better. So rather than seeking perfection I ask that my team and my clients strive for CANI – Constant And Never-ending Improvement. This means we never arrive, we never reach a standard we are happy to settle for, and we never sit in mediocrity.

Now I love doing this in my business. In business there are KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators) and measurable outcomes and real data. But how do you do it with your riding?

The first thing is KNOWING and LOVING you are the best rider you can be today, doing your best with the knowledge and resources available to you at the present moment, and tomorrow you will be better. If you KNEW how to do better you would. You understand that don’t you? I don’t think you have ever ridden your horse thinking “oh I know how to do this but I am consciously choosing to do it the wrong way, and therefore getting the wrong result on purpose”. So sometimes we ride well, and sometimes we ride not so well. I always say when the horse goes well – gee, I’m riding well today, and when he goes not so well – I say gee Tash your riding is very interesting today! What about when I have a bad test or a bad ride? Well, firstly I don’t label it as such. It’s interesting, or it’s a tremendous learning opportunity or a marvelous chance to grow and become better. And it’s exciting! We only learn, grow and develop from less than ideal situations! When we have a sensational ride we enjoy it but we don’t learn as much as when it all falls apart. So it’s not a time to be sad, it’s a time to become EXCITED about it! Another mentor says “quality problems have quality results”. You want high quality problems so that you can grow and learn, and overcome the challenge to get an even better high quality result.

So to recap:

1. You are the best rider you can be today. You are doing the best you can with the knowledge and resources available to you at the present moment. If you knew how to do better, you would. And the best part – tomorrow you will be better.
2. Get excited about your problems – they are not problems, they are challenges, opportunities to grow, a chance to develop into your full potential. How can you not get excited about that!!!

So, if you are doing your best with what you have in the present moment, and you are excited about your opportunities to develop, how can you be anything but pumped, excited and thrilled to be out there riding every day?!?! Why would you, or how could you even have time for, be bothered with, or entertain the notion of “I’m not good enough yet”?

I’m sure none of you have but you know of someone that does. Not you of course! J But others that have used the excuses:

“I don’t know enough”

“I can’t do it”

“I can’t understand it”

“I shouldn’t”

“I can’t do that level yet”

“I’ll never be good enough for that/at that”

Now with all those excuses all I can say is “YES”! But add the words – right now but I will.

“I don’t know enough right now, but I will”

“I can’t do it right now, but I will”

“I can’t understand it right now, but I will”

“I shouldn’t do that right now, but I will”

“I can’t do that level right now, but I will”

Be ok with the rider you are TODAY! Be ok with the progress you have already made TODAY, be accepting, tolerant and nice to you TODAY! I’m not saying don’t strive, work, demand for more! You definitely should! I push for more than I can even conceive from myself, my clients and my team every day. But I am also accepting of “my limit for TODAY is…”!! A fabulous quote is “yesterday’s efforts will get you yesterdays results” if you want more results you need to put in more effort. This is where CANI fits in perfectly. Do your best today. And tomorrow make it better, and continue and continue and continue forever! Constant and Never-ending Improvement.

Now a lot of people hear that and say oh my god Tash, isn’t that exhausting? You never can stop, you never can relax. I laugh! Why would I want to stop? Why would I want to relax in my business and stop giving amazing value and experience to my clients? Why would I want to relax on my horse and get the same mediocre scores for the rest of my competition career? Relaxing is for the beach! It’s not for everyday life! Mediocrity is exhausting. Settling for average is tiring. CANI is invigorating, exciting and means my life is constantly different and challenged. If you are not growing you are dying. So I choose to grow. What do you choose?

4 Keys to Being Empowered by Your Image

Recently on a segment of Oprah, I saw two people sharing their shame of going out in public due to their appearance. I’d heard this plaguing experience from a few women I know as well. It seems that image can be something to boast about or be ashamed of, rather than something to be empowered by.

So often the image one portrays or will try to portray is one that they’ve been taught from society. It seems as if every photo has been airbrushed or redone to perfection. Models appear thin and flawless.

Most people relate to image as merely the clothes they wear, type of car they drive or home they live in.

But image has a deeper meaning than that. From a much more powerful place, image is about being true to who you are and projecting your authentic self outwardly to the world.

When you experience a sense of authentic truth within and project it simultaneously, you are far more fulfilled and confident in your own skin and all of life.

I believe if confidence is lacking there are a few critical areas missing in life.

Let’s take a look at the four keys to being empowered by your image.

The First Key – Know Your Vision and Purpose.

Truly know who you are prior to choosing the clothes to wear. It is imperative that you do the work of identifying your “why”. The “why” acts as a driver of your actions and when “purpose” drives your actions, you’re far more fulfilled in life.

The Second Key -Accept The Image Of Yourself.

Accepting yourself is a major component in empowering your image. Many women and, believe it or not, men have challenges accepting themselves as they are. The key is knowing that the body you have right now in this moment is the body you have right now. Not the one you want in the future or the one you’ve had in the past, but the one you have right now. So accept the image, the body and fullness of who you are right now.

Acceptance means that you love, honor, accept, appreciate and celebrate the fullness of your body and your image. You can certainly have a body that you want and aspire to have, however full acceptance of right now is required.

The Third Key – Know What Expresses You and Know Your Style.

Once you’re grounded in your vision and purpose, then you’re ready to assess what truly expresses you from an outward standpoint. For those who love shopping, you have permission to go on a joy ride of finding the style of clothing that expresses who you are. For example, if what fully expresses you is a more classic look, then you’ll begin your search for clothing in that style. If it’s sexy, sporty or elegant, the same applies. And for men classic, sporty or trendy may be the style. Whichever it is, the key once again is the place from which you choose your style. In this case, your vision and purpose – your “why”.

The Fourth Key – Create An Environment Consistent With Your Vision and Your Style.

So you’ve got your vision, your style is right for you, you’ve accepted your body. Now you’re ready to create an environment consistent with YOUR image.

The environment is your surroundings; spaces you frequently occupy like your home, office and car. These are all a reflection of you, so the images you create of these spaces are just as critical.

Simply take inventory of the space and make small changes to represent your style and your image. For example, if your style is elegant, you may redecorate your home to be reflective of that style. However, if you’re on a limited budget you can slowly buy a few pieces of elegant artwork to add to your office or home.

You don’t have to do it all at once, so take this opportunity to make small changes. The idea is to “create” your environment like an artist with a new canvas. Give yourself freedom to have your creation unfold naturally and freely.

These four keys will empower and inspire you to be more of who you are inwardly and outwardly. It’s an amazing feeling when all of who you are is reflected within you and around you.

Remember when “purpose” drives your actions; you’re far more fulfilled in life. You feel better, you look better and live better…

Stop Reading and Start Doing!

In this day and age of social media, e-zines and enough self-help books to absorb the oil spill, it becomes incredibly easy to get tied up in reading about the life you want instead of LIVING IT. Of course, there is a great deal of knowledge to be gained by such experts and stories but at some point one has to TAKE ACTION!

If you don’t know where to start, that’s OK. The most difficult part in doing anything is usually just getting it off the ground. I have always found that once I put the intention out there that I am going to do or create “something”, I then start attracting the right people and things to make it happen. To this day, this constantly amazes me! Trust me, there are still plenty of days I find myself spinning around the office with no clue as to what to do next or how I am going to get there. It is just as easy for me to get encapsulated in the reading and research. It is during those moments that I take time to re-focus and examine my plan.

A plan for me is simply a rough map of where I am going, what I want to accomplish and how I plan to do it. Like most maps, it does not include the major traffic jams, potholes and detours…but it does keep me focused on where I am going. Any destination without a map is a whole lot harder to get to. It is so important not to lose site of where it is you are heading. However, at some point you have to put down the map and drive. (I know enough metaphors)

So put down the books, log-off your computer and start LIVING the life you want!

Thoughts + Action = RESULTS!

Shine ON!

Five Reasons Why People Lose Their Spark

Yellow Rose

Yellow Rose

1. Disappointment with God
So many have a wrong understanding of God`s plan for us and we therefore become disappointed as a result. Their prayer life is full of unanswered requests and they fail to appreciate the wider aspect of this discipline, which is primarily about a relationship with Him. This involves both talking and listening and developing an intimate engagement with God through time spent with Him. The spark can be lost as frustration sets in, because our needs are not met. We see God as someone who should be providing all the time, instead of someone we can love and enjoy.

2. Upset in the Church
The church is meant to be a living expression of who God is and a place of support, blessing and growth. This is very often far from our experience as we battle with each other for position, value and recognition. We feel let down by leaders and others in the church who promise so much and deliver so little. Sometimes what we read in the Bible is such a contrast to what we see in the lives of those who share our faith. The can be spark lost as we struggle with feelings of being hurt, which often results in leaving the church and going it alone.

3. Testings, Trials and Tragedy
The difficulties we face in life cause much pain and unhappiness as we juggle with issues that challenge our faith. We want to be comfortable and major on the truths of joy, peace, fulfillment and completeness in Christ. We are bombarded with success driven literature and are taught to be inspired by those who are successful. Whilst none of these paths are wrong in themselves, we have got to embrace the other side of suffering and hardship. God uses these to shape our personality and the Bible is full of accounts of those who were heroes of the faith through much tribulation and thus entered the Kingdom of God. Our spark can be lost because we are looking through the wrong pair of glasses.

4. Lack of Spiritual Maintenance
Any machine, house or animal needs looking after if it is to function properly and perform to the best of it`s capabilities. Our lives are no different. It is amazing how many think they can run on empty and have a close encounter with their creator when little effort has been made. The Sunday service continues to be the highlight of the week and the main provision for our journey. A spiritual MOT is needed to find out what needs strengthening, repairing or replacing. The spark is lost when there`s nothing in the engine to feed the system, resulting in our lives grinding to a halt.

5. Influence of Unhealthy Factors
We are called as disciples to rub shoulders with many types of people and get involved with varied situations which may even be contrary to our beliefs. We can choose to stand alone and be isolated or infiltrate as we saw Jesus doing in weddings and funerals. The pressures to conform are enormous and it is a constant battle to get the balance correct. Some do, but others find themselves overwhelmed by the attraction, the lure and the excitement of the forbidden fruit. Our spark can be lost as these factors cover over our lives and starve us of air.

A great way of reviving that spark is to allow a fellow Christian to encourage and challenge you.

The Key to True Happiness

It is a sad and true fact that the vast majority of people are not really happy.

The reason for this all of the unhappiness is because to many people are looking for reasons outside of themselves to be happy. You know what I mean, I am sure that you have probably said this yourself, “I will be happy when…” What is that when?  When you find the perfect mate? When your children have children that live the life you always wanted or maybe it is when you get that promotion and the raise that goes with it. Ok, you get those things – but then what happens once the initial excitement wears off?

At first you are happy that you have that perfect mate.

At first you are happy that you got the promotion and the raise.

At first you are happy when your children show the drive to achieve what you want for them.

The list can go on forever of all the things that make us happy at first.

Maybe you don’t exactly say that you will be happy when you get something. You could term it like this, “I will do this, when that happens.” I have to ask you, what are you waiting for? You are giving up control of your life and making your happiness contingent upon something that you really have no control over.

I know a guy named Mike that used to think way. He always said that he would travel the world once he found his perfect mate. He said that for many years and then one day it dawned on him, that he didn’t need to have the perfect mate to travel the world. In fact he didn’t need a mate at all. He now travels the world, it is a rare weekend that you find him sitting at home, he is truly happy and he is single.

The moment you realize that your happiness is not based on what it going on, on the outside your life will change. Sure you are happy in the beginning with whatever it is that you got, but that happiness only last so long.

Think about the list above, at first you were happy with that ideal mate. Your attitude though has not changed and now the happy relationship is routine and you are waiting for the next big thing to make you happy.

You did get the promotion and the raise and you knew that meant you would get the ideal house that you and your spouse wanted. You move in and it is happy and exciting for awhile but all to soon, the routine nature of life kicks in and again you are waiting for the next big thing to make you happy.

You need to stop right now and look at all the time you are wasting in your life being happy for “things in life.” You will never truly be happy when you make that happiness dependent on external factors.

So What is the Secret the to True Happiness

You would think with all the books that have been written about how to be happy, there would be more happy people in the world. Ok, reading isn’t for everyone but there are books on tape to listen – people still are not happy. The biggest surprise is that most of the people that read those books or listen to those tapes still aren’t happy.

This is enough to make you think that truly being happy must be a really tough task to accomplish.

You know that isn’t necessarily true. You have seen happy people, they are always smiling, when they talk it sounds like they are smiling and when they walk they have a certain pep in their step. You want what they have – you begin to look at their life and what they have.

Did you find their secret to happiness?

After taking a closer look have you finally begun to see that it isn’t anything they own? It is really something simple and easy to do.

Happiness, true happiness is actually pretty quick to attain and there really isn’t a long drawn out procedure to follow.

Nope, you missed it. Well here is the secret:

Happiness comes from the inside, it is an internal factor, not an external one.

True happiness comes from the inside out. True happiness is found when you realize that there isn’t anything in the world that can make you happy except for yourself. You are the master of your own destiny, your happiness is yours and yours alone. The way you choose to react to what life offers you is what dictates your happiness.

Wake up every morning and say out loud, “Today I am happy.” Do you know something, you will be happy. If you go to work and a stressful event happens remind yourself that. “Today I am happy.” It doesn’t make the stress go away, it just changes the way you react to that stress.

Happy people react differently to stress. They simply go with the flow, they do not let the stress consume them. You can be that person, a truly happy person.

First you have to make that determination each and every morning.

If need be, on a piece of paper write the phrase, “Today I am happy,’ and tape it all over your home and your office space.

Repeat it to yourself every chance you get through the day. Repeat it more often when stress arises. Say it until you believe it.

Go a step further, smile. It is hard to be negative and anger with a smile on your face. Smile and embrace the world, when you are a truly happy person the world is your play thing.

Daily Inspirational Quotes – Start Each Day With Inspiring Quotes

A great life consists of keeping your eyes on the distant mountains of your life purpose while continuing to put one foot in front of the other along the path of everyday life. However, it is all too easy to lose sight of the goal and get lost in everyday frustrations, angers and disappointments.

Including daily reminders of your life purpose in each day’s routine can help keep your focus on your goals. Great reminders can include meditation, prayer, yoga, positive affirmations, and also daily inspirational quotes.

Inspirational quotes are typically fragmentary thoughts, taken out of context, that are best used to get you thinking about their underlying meaning and about the big commitments and values of your life. As an example, let’s take a look at President Franklin Roosevelt’s quote, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself – nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror.” Those words were a part of President Roosevelt’s First Inaugural Address on March fourth 1933, in the depths of the Great Depression. But is it necessary to understand the context in order to appreciate the thought and apply it in your life? Not only is the context not necessary, but in my opinion, it actually makes it more difficult to focus the inspiration on your own issues around fear.

Your fears are not about the depression of 1933, or about the Second World War, which many people think Roosevelt was referring to. Whatever your fears, it is inspirational to be reminded that fear, especially the formless fear of the unknown, is the true enemy of living a joyful and productive life.

As another example, consider Helen Keller’s words, “Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.” Helen Keller overcame being deaf and blind from the age of 19 months to become an author and social activist. In that context, the quote has an extra “wow” factor – that someone bearing those burdens could still speak of an ideal life as a daring adventure. Nonetheless, as an inspirational quote to guide your own life, Keller’s words, independent of their context, are a powerful reminder to focus on the big picture – what you came here to do.

There is often disagreement over the source of an inspirational quote. For example, Martin Luther King Jr. may or may not have said, “”Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” Mark Twain quite likely did not say, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.” Does it make an inspirational quote less meaningful or less inspirational because the author is unknown? For me, the value of inspirational quotes is mostly in the words, and how I can apply them to my own life, rather than in historical context. I find the Faith quote and the Twenty Years quote to be two of the most inspiring and motivating quotes I have found – whoever their authors may have been.

Inspirational quotes can be uplifting or motivational, spiritual or practical. Some of the most inspiring quotes, such as the Faith quote attributed to Martin Luther King Jr., share several of these qualities. For maximum impact on your life and goals, try to include a variety of types of inspirational quotes.

Consider beginning the practice of starting each day by reading and contemplating inspirational quotes.

The Importance of Faith

Girl Praying

Girl Praying

We are so busy in our fast paced lives that faith is becoming a feeling that is slowly fading away from us. ‘Faith’ - means undeterred belief in something. Though it has religious or spiritual connotations, I am referring to it in the context of sheer belief. I would like to share how someone I know revived her faith.

This is the journey of a young woman, let’s call her Sara. Without going into the minutiae of her life, I will tell you about the journey of loss and later renewal of her faith. Sara was a single mother struggling to make ends meet and provide the best she could for her son. Somewhere in all the years of juggling and fighting her way out of all her problems she had lost faith in God, people and goodness. She was bitter and jaded from all that she went through.

Then she met someone that she thought was ‘The One for Her’. He was wonderful to her and her son. After a long time she was beginning to rediscover her emotional side. She thought her life was finally turning around for good. But, her happiness was not meant to last. He turned out to be something else, something that she had gotten away from years ago. She had invested her emotions and her son’s with this man and he abused the love they showered on him. The experience hit her hard. She felt like she had been thrown into the trenches of sorrow and betrayal. And in the process of overcoming the sorrow and pain, he had caused, she found faith.

Like an epiphany, enlightenment, or whatever you can call it, she realized that she had lost her faith and let herself sway. With that realization, she shrugged the bad memory off and decided that she would encounter life with renewed faith in goodness and God. She transformed her suffering into a celebration of renewed faith. In all this misfortune she saw the mini trinkets of fortune that were bestowed on her. She realized that in spite of what she had to go through, she avoided herself and her son greater pain in the future. She now faces everyday and every challenge with a smile and positive attitude, because she has faith. She is treading a new empowered path: the path of Faith – faith that good things can happen, faith in God, faith in people and faith that “Bad things happen for a Good reason”.

The lesson I learnt from her story is that: Life is full of ups and downs, we cannot change bad things from happening to us, but we have to hold onto our faith to be able to sail through the bad times, unscathed.

Another Way to Look at Our Life

Green Path

“What is life?” “Why are we here?” These questions had been asked since the beginning of human history. Today, we still ask the same question why we are here. I know there is going to be different answer from all over the world. Try to find a universal unique answer for this complex question is highly unlikely. Albert Einstein said: “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” If we stand in the same location where the problem resides, we will never be able to see the problem clearly and find the effective solution. So how do we solve the problem then? We have to see it differently, think it differently.

In the mathematic world, the answer for a question is correct or not is dependant on the “domain” you first defined. We can also say the correct answer for this “why are we here” is totally depend on how you define life. Have you ever thought of “Life” is no more than a collection of past memory. If you said my life is terrible, what you really mean is the past experience you had had been kept in our brain become a memory. Life is more than what you can remember, but only the parts you can remember are meaningful to you. If you have lost your memory due to an accident, then until one day you start to remember the past memory, those “good” or “bad” time really doesn’t mean anything in your current life. If you have a bad life or unsatisfied life, it only means you don’t have a good memory in the past. And we know past doesn’t equal future.

If you want to change your life from disappointment to satisfactory, then you need to do something “NOW”. The past had passed, you can’t change it, but you have the power to create in “NOW”. What you do now, will become your experience and your memory. Tomorrow, all these experience and memory become part of your life. So, what kind of the life you are dreaming for? Create it without hesitation, create it without fear. Living this way, you are going to love your LIFE very soon. Live consciously, design your life base on your dreams, not based on your unsatisfied past. That’s why we are here, that’s call living a life,
